EM Basic Essential Evidence- The NEXUS study
Posted: September 17, 2012 Filed under: Podcasts 4 Comments »This episode will discuss the NEXUS study. NEXUS studied thousands of patients to validate a set of rules so that we can “clinically clear” patients with possible c-spine injury without getting an x-ray. This study has helped us avoid radiation in certain low-risk patients, saved the cost of x-rays and CT scans, and speed these patients through the ED. We’ll talk a lot about the statistical side of this study and how you can apply it in your everyday practice.

I love your podcasts. I work as a nurse on a trauma/neuro unit at a level 1 trauma center/stroke center. I love learning about the evaluations, rational, treatment received prior to admission. Thank you so much for all the time and effort that you put in for so many others.
Thanks for commenting and thanks for listening. I am glad that you find it useful and that you get something from it- that’s why I do it.

Another mnemonic for NEXUS is the treatment for when NEXUS is negative: NSAID.
N – neuro deficits
S – spine tenderness
A – AMS
I – Intoxication
D – Distracting injury
Jon-
Good point- I learned ABCDE but I have seen more people use NSAID
