Back pain
Posted: October 24, 2011 Filed under: Podcasts 4 Comments »Back pain is not usually the most exciting chart in the rack but there are many serious diagnoses lurking out there that we have to look out for. In this episode, we’ll go over how to do a good back pain history and physical, catch the red flags, form a broad differential, order the right tests (not everyone need labs and films!), and treat the patient’s pain effectively.

Hi Steve
Thanks for the podcast. I am a JHO in Australia at the beginning of my training in ED/ICU as joint fellowships. Your podcast is a great refresher for the various presentations in the ED. I wanted to ask if you could please mention the drugs in their generic names as we have different trade names so often they don’t match up.
Thanks again
Ryan
Hey Ryan
Thanks so much for the comments. I figured that someone would mention this at some point and I will do my best to mention the generic names. I’ve tried this on occasion in the past and the only problem is that it really breaks up the flow of the podcast. That being said, I’ll make an effort from here on out to mention the generic name at least once whenever I mention a new drug. Thinking back, for the airway episode (the most “drug heavy” episode)- most of the drugs I mentioned were trade names but I realize that a lot of other episodes had a lot of trade names mentioned. I appreciate the feedback.
Great to hear that the podcast is having a positive worldwide impact. Good luck in your training (I do love critical care…) and thanks for listening

If you haven’t seen it already- I just published a reference list of all the generic drug names from the episodes thus far and updated the show notes. Here’s the link to the blog post:

I really like it when individuals come together and share opinions. Great blog, keep it up!
